The Douro Navigable Waterway (DNW), spanning approximately 210 kilometers from the mouth of the Douro River to Barca D'Alva, serves as a transportation route connecting Portugal's coastal and inland regions, as well as Spain. The 125-meter elevation difference along the Douro River between the sea and Barca D'Alva is overcome by five locks.

The Port of Viana is located near the mouth of the Lima River, in the northwest area of Portugal. Having been significant since the Middle Ages through the Portuguese Age of Discovery, the Port of Viana do Castelo ranks as the third busiest port in the country in terms of traffic.
