Leixões handles 13 million tons of commodities till September

Up to September, the Port of Leixões handled 13.2 million tons of commodities with particular emphasis on the ro-ro cargo (+ 937%) when compared with the same period of 2013.

Containerized cargo had also an increase of 7.2%, break bulk cargo grew 2.8% and dry bulk cargo increased 1.4% over the same period last year. Containers handling also grew both in TEU's (+3%) and in number (+10.8%).

On the other hand, liquid bulk cargo fell by 10% due to reduced imports of crude oil.

In this period, the Port of Leixões exported 4.3 million tons of commodities, which means an increase of 6.8%. The export of pellets increased significantly (+134.7%), along with the paper (+22.6%), beverages (+21.2%) and granite cubes (+17.1%).

Belgium was the country that contributed the most to this growth (+65%), which is associated to a strong growth of refined products towards this destination (+105%).
