Port of Leixões Hits Monthly Record
4.45 Million Tonnes of Commodities Handled in the First Quarter
The Port of Leixões handled 1.73 million tonnes of commodities in March, which represents an increase of 4.2% over the same month last year. It was the best month ever at this port exceeding the previous maximum recorded of cargo handled in April 2013. In the first quarter of the year, the Port of Leixões grew 5.1% with 4.45 million tonnes of commodities handled.
The evolution in this quarter was positive in Liquid Bulk (+2.9%), in Break Bulk Cargo (+8%), in Ro-Ro Cargo (+103.8%) and in Solid Bulk (+47.7%). On the other hand, there was a decrease in Containerized Cargo (-10.5%), which is linked to a significant fall in exports to Angola (-37%). Containerized Cargo falls 4.9% in TEU and 5.4% in the number of containers.
Concerning exports, the first quarter of this year was similar to last year, standing out the growth in the iron (+16.2%) and aromatics (+57.8%).
By including the Port of Viana do Castelo, which merged with Leixões earlier this year, the global movement grew 4.8% reaching 4.55 million tonnes.
