Water quality monitoring ensures that waters remain unpolluted at Leixões
After an incident with formic acid
Water quality Monitoring carried out by CIIMAR
Following a small spill of formic acid at the Port of Leixões, the Port Authority requested a water quality analysis from CIIMAR - the Interdisciplinary Centre of Marine and Environmental Research of the University of Porto. The study concluded that there was no trace of acid in the water, so there was no impact on the ecosystem or risk to public health.
The slight spill occurred during the handling of a container aboard of HSL Porto ship from Maersk. The Port Authority immediately activated the contingency measures and procedures by request the support of the National Authority for Civil Protection to accompany the handling of ship's container. In all the time, the port activity functioned normally.
