Strategic Aims

The global strategy of the company is built upon four major areas: Customer and Market Orientation, Global Port Efficiency, Value Creation and Financial Stability and Sustainability and Environment, which led to the following Strategic Aims:


Ports of Douro, Leixões and Viana do Castelo

  • Create value, grow, diversify business and maintain a balanced financial structure;

  • Maximize efficiency and profitability in the use of infrastructure;

  • Increase productivity levels and reduce unit costs;

  • Satisfy infrastructure and services users;

  • Achieve greater proximity to customers;

  • Increase awareness and strengthen institutional relations at the international level;

  • Ensure proper integration into the Community and the Region;

  • Ensure greater efficiency in processes;

  • Promote environmental improvements of port concessions operations;

  • Be efficient in the dominial management model;

  • Improve efficiency and Information System risk management;

  • Be excellent on infrastructure and facilities offer, management, development and maintenance;

  • Improve levels of environmental quality;

  • Develop a sustainability culture and practices

  • Plan and develop the port area

  • Increase security levels;

  • Develop functional skills, leadership and strategic levels at Leixões and Viana do Castelo;

  • Increase levels of motivation, leadership and organizational alignment;

  • Acquire new knowledge and seek international examples in key business areas;

  • Enlarge organizational alignment levels.

Port of Viana do Castelo

  • Ensure economic and financial balance;
  • Strengthening the commercial action among current and new customers;
  • Optimize the Operating Model at the Port of Viana do Castelo.
Some indicators, targets, and responsible employees were defined in order to facilitate the monitoring of these 22 Strategic Aims. Such monitoring has been done through monthly meetings (AGM - Monthly Assessment Management) using the methodology of BSC - Balanced Scorecard.
From an operational point of view, the achievement of these objectives is part of a plan of 25 actions and 65 projects spanning different aspects of port activities management. Among others, we emphasized the improvement of maritime and land access, the building of infrastructures for new markets, simplification of procedures, operations security, the integration of the port in the urban environment, the quality management system, the creation of value added services, training and cooperation, environmental quality and port marketing.
Since October 2008, APDL is part of the PAEX program - Partnerships for Excellence, managed by Fundação Dom Cabral (Brazil) and Porto Business School. From this program comes the necessary support for the strategic planning and management of the company towards the engagement of primarily responsible and other workers in its strategic objectives. It was precisely during 2009 that the process of strategic discussion has developed and led to the reformulation of the Vision, Mission, Values ​​and Strategic Objectives set out above.
